Famvir Product Description
Drug Uses
Famvir is a pro-agent, which is biotransformed into the antiviral compound penciclovir after getting into the body. Famvir tablets have a prolonged antiviral effect, and are used to control:
- Recurrent herpes forms of varying severity
- First and repeated episodes of genital herpes and shingles
- Various forms of herpes in HIV-infected patients
People suffering from herpes with or without a weakened immune system, should take one Famvir pill (150, 250 or 500 mg) every 8 or 12 hours. The average duration of anti-herpes treatment with Famvir is 7 days.
Missed dose
If the patient misses one Famvir dose, he/she should take this antiviral drug as soon as remembers. The missed Famvir pill should not be taken, if the time for taking the next dose is close. Do not double doses and do not take extra medicines to compensate for the missed dose.
More Information
Famvir-therapy should begin as soon as possible after the first signs of herpes. The maximum antiviral effect is achieved, if Famvir pills have been taken within 48-72 hours after the onset of the viral disease symptoms.
